Our trip to San Antonio and Austin is almost over. What fun it was to see everyone... aunts, uncles and cousins!! All six Kutac children made it (Dorothy, Beverly, Margaret, Bill, Virginia and Elizabeth). Thanks Uncle Bill for hosting our reunion. And thanks to Becky and Cerys for showing us around Austin. What cool and weird town! It is now my favorite place anywhere for margaritas and enchiladas.
Another example of the iPhone camera's ability to get into locations that the SLR can't. I've been thinking about doing this shot for some time. In fact, I tried it before with the 5DMII and failed. This worked well, managing to capture the sides leading in.

This is Percy, the greyhound. He's always sticking his nose into my depth-of-field.

  • Nuclear Powered Glass Cleaner

When I was 12, my grade school science class went for a tour of the University of Kansas Radition Biophysics Lab in Burt Hall. Our tour guide began by showing us how they start a reaction in the nuclear pile by withdrawing control rods. No kidding, an operator standing at a control console sent the command while we all stood there watching. The guide then led us up a steep winding set of stairs to the top of the pile. There at the top looking down into the bottom of a thirty foot, water filled reactor pool, my classmates and I were treated to a firsthand glimpse of Cherenkov Radiation. The color and intensity looked something like the glass cleaner here.

Years later in graduate school (1990), the aerospace engineering department assigned me a TA's office in Burt Hall. By that time, the reactor had been decommissioned and the material taken away. The high-bay area with the reactor, however, was still there. And, if you looked carefully though the bay's glass doors, you could still see the concrete structure that surrounded the pile. As I recall, they had packed in what looked like sand bags around the pile but I imagine they were filled with lead shot. Hmmm... My office was right next door. But my kids turned out normal... sort of ;)
